What is the printer?
The printer is the most popular output device at the present time. The printer provides output in hard copy like paper.
We can say that a printer gives permanent output. Now let us see how many types of printers are available !!
Modern printers have developed a lot in the technology that results in high speed, better quality and also expensive.
However, there are different types of printers available at affordable prices, good quality.

different types of printer
1. Impact printer
2. Non-impact printer
Impact printer
Impact printers generally make contact against ribbon and paper and strike over. These processes result in printing the text on paper. Impact printer uses the electromagnet mechanism. Impacts are classified into two categories.
1. Line printer
2. Serial printer
Line printer
A line printer as its name suggests that it prints a complete line at a time. The modern line printer due to advancement in technology has grown a lot compared to before.
Generally, a line printer prints from 150 - 2500 lines/minute. Line printers can further be divided into two types.
Types of Line printer
1. Drum printer
2. Chain printer
Drum printer
A drum printer comes in the shape of a cylindrical drum in which characters are presented ( embossed ). Since it is the type of Line printer, it prints the entire line at a time.
It one of the popular types of printer also in any specific area. However, its printing speed is between 300 - 400 lines/minute.
Chain printer
A chain printer as its name suggests contains a chain shape head. On this head, printing characters are fixed that assist to print the character by striking over the page.
Actually, chain printers are designed to assist the massive and complex work. This is capable of working for a long period continuously.
Serial printer
A serial printer is also known as a character printer because it prints only a single character at a time. It consists of printing heads that strike over the page to print the contents.
Normally a serial printer prints the character between 30 - 300 characters/second. Serial printers can be divided into two categories.
Types of Serial printer
1. Dot matrix printer
2. Later quality printer
Dot-matrix printer
A dot matrix printer print character with a combination of dots. The printer head shifted horizontally and these heads contain different combinations of pines.
The number of pines may be 7, 9, 14, 18, or 24 pines in array form. The combination of these pines is organized into rows and columns.
These pines help to print the character on the paper in the form of row and column
For instance: a capital letter in DMP is formed using the 5*7 matrix of dots i.e. 5 dots rows and 7 dots column.
The dot matrix printers have more number pines and have better quality. Nowadays due to advancements in the pines up to 132 or above result in better quality.
Daisy Wheel printer
The daisy wheel printer is also called a letter-quality printer which prints the character in plain format.
The dots matrix printer prints in dot format whether daisy wheel printer in the format of complete.
This contains a head the size of a daisy flower. At the time of printing the charter is sent first into the character buffer.
since the head is rotating at high speed that results in striking on the character and finally assisting to print the character.
Non-impact printer
A non-impact printer as its name suggests, this does not make any physical contact or strikes over the page to print the document.
These printers use different techniques to achieve the printing task. Non-impact printers can be defined into the following categories.
Types of Non-Impact printer
1. an Inkjet printer
2. Laser printer
3. Thermal printer
Inkjet Printer
An inkjet printer prints the text or document in the dots form by spreading the small drops of ink on the paper. Inkjet printer head container having 64 or more nozzles.
These nozzles can be heated up in very few moments like in microseconds with the help of I.C. After heating up the ink gets vaporized and starts ejection through the nozzle
on the paper.
Nowadays color inkjet printers are also available which provide color printing output. It contains four catteries of color Black, Red, Blue, and Yellow.
The colors are mixed in an appropriate amount at the timing of printing the image or document.
It is possible to get any color only with a combination of these four colors. Inkjet printers that contain more nozzle provide higher resolution and great quality.
Laser printers
A laser printer is a type of non-impact printer which prints one page at a time. Laser beam technology is used in this printer to receive any kind of output from this printer

It acts like scanning and forming an image. These laser focus areas attract the toner and the drum release the toner on the paper permanently by heat or presser.
The major components of laser printers are (i) laser beam source (ii) photoconductive drum (iii) Multi-sided mirror (iv) toner etc. It is quite faster and expensive.
a common laser printer consists of a resolution of about 600 DPI ( Dot Per Inch ). There are also few lesser printers consisting of higher resolution like 1200 DPI or above. It proved black and white output as well as color output also. These are very popular these days.
Thermal printer
A thermal printer is also known as an electrothermal printer or thermal impact printer. Generally, printer heads use heat pines to achieve the printing process.
However, the quality of this printer is poorer than the other printer. But it is faster than the few other printers. Since the quality of this printer is poor so, its price is less.
