How many generations of computers are there?

Computer is being used for years and the technology never been the same. These computer technology changed time to time according to the requirement that refers as generation of computer. Human always

have been string to make the technology easy and efficient. These are the Generation of computer technology based on computer Hardware.

Generation of computer 1st to 5th

1. Firs Generation of computer ( 1942-1955)

This is the first generation of computer in which Vacuum Tube technology was used. Vacuum Tube made possible to run computer which was the major advantage of the first generation of computer.

But the problem with first generation of computer system  was that size was bulky,  A.C required , larger space, and heat up very fast.

Important Point:

1. Vacuum tube was used.
2. Machine Language was used for programming
3. Big size and clumsy in design.
4. Electric failure regular and not reliable.
5. AC ( Air Condition ) was required to run the computer.
6. Consuming large amount of electricity
7. Example: Mark-1, Mark-2, UNIAC, EDSAC, UNIVAC, IBM-701, IBM-650 etc.

2. 2nd Generation of computer (1956-1964)

Transistor was used in the 2nd generation of computer system. Transistor are made up of Semiconductor and Semiconductor is a mineral that connect electricity.

This  was more reliable, smaller in size, and heat up time more then  the first generation.

Important point:

1. Transistor was used.
2. Programming in Assembly language.
3. It became smaller in size.
4. It was more reliable.
5. It was cheaper.
6. First Operating system were developed.
7. Produced less heat then it's previous computer.

3rd Generation Computer (1965-1975)

3rd generation of computer introduced I.C ( Integrated Circuit ) which made possible to run computer system. An integrated circuit is a single component contain a number of transistors.

The first computer used ICs were known as 3rd generation computer.

Important point

1. I.C ( integrated circuit) was used.
2. Programming in High Level Language.
3. It became more smaller and reliable.
4. It was more cheaper.
5. Lowe power consumption.
6. Magnetic tap technology used to store data up to 100 MB.
7. SSI and MSI technology used.
8. Example: IBM-360, ICL-900 series, IBM-390/168 etc.

4. Fourth Generation of Computer (1976-1990)

Micro-Processor technology brought evolution in 4th generation of computer system. 4GL was used for programming language like JAVA, PHYTHON, .NET etc.

Micro processor was used so, this generation of computer also known as Micro-computer.  This was more powerful, larger memory space, no heating issue, and was easy to operate.

Important point:

1. LSI and VLSI was used.
2. Fourth Generation of programming Language.
3. It became more smaller, reliable.
4. No air condition was required.
5. No longer heating issue.
6. Various secondary memory introduced with fast access.
7. Micro processor was used, so also called it Micro computer.
8. Great development in data communication based on network system.

5. Fifth Generation of Computer (1991- up to now)

A.I technology was used in this generation of computer. This generation of computer is still under development and being enhance everyday. This most costly, High  conflagration system, and more powerful in compare all previous generation of computer.

some popular examples of A.I is  Apple's Siri on the iPhone,  Cortana of Microsoft on windows O/S. Now google is also using the A.I in Google search for process the input.

Important point:

1. A.I ( Artificial Intelligence) was used.
2. 5th Generation Language like Mercury, was used.
3. This is more powerful and most costly computer.
4. Parallel processor used I.e. multiple processor combined to function simultaneously.
5. Still it is under development.
6. It focus on knowledge processing instead of data processing.
7. This computer act parallel to human in thinking and decision making.

In this article you have successfully learnt about the all generation of computer. Each and everyday technology is  being developed. Hope you have found this very useful. one more final word i have for you. Please give you feedback either you liked this or not.
